Increasing use of pyrethroid insecticides has resulted in concern regarding potential effects on human health and ecosystems. Recent studies have shown that the metabolite of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (PBA) has adverse biological impacts on environment. However, till today there were few reports about the determination of PBA in soil. Ultrasonic extraction and determination of PBA in soil by HPLC were investigated in this study. The extraction technique was optimized using several solvents (including methanol, acetonitrile, methanol and dichloromethane, acetonitrile and dichloromethane, mixture of methanol, dichloromethane and hydrochloric acid, mixture of acetonitrile, dichloromethane and hydrochloric acid) and duration of ultrasonic. Different composed mobile phases were also compared. The results showed that the satisfactory extraction efficiencies of PBA could be obtained by ultrasonic extraction for 40 min using the mixture of methanol, dichloromethane and hydrochloric acid. After addition of hydrochloric acid (0.2% V/V), the recovery rates of PBA increased greatly. Compared to the solvents without dichloromethane, the recoveries were increased by about 10%. The best moving phase was the mixture of acetonitrile and water (60:40 V/V). The recovery rates of PBA fortified at 0.5, 10, 50 mg times kg super(-1) were from 92% to 102.6%, with CV from 0.3% to 8.4% in two soils. The detection limit was 0.01 mg times kg super(-1). The determination of PBA in two soils by this method showed good reproducibility, with the CV values 3.1% and 2.6%, respectively.
