[More] Excerpt y was made of rabbit and guinea pig lungs, and the effect of prolonged inhalation of ammonia in low concentration. The author used for this purpose a special apparatus, giving in the chamber a constant percentage of ammonia. Concentrations of 1.5, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.15 cc. of gaseous ammonia per liter of the chamber air were used. The experimental animals were kept in this chamber constantly until either death occurred or they were killed for examination. Their temperatures were taken daily, and they were weighed from time to time. Out of a total of 22 experimental animals, 3 rabbits and 11 guinea pigs died spontaneously, and 3 rabbits and 5 guinea pigs were killed. There was a rise of temperature in all the experimental animals exposed to concentrations of ammonia above 0.15 percent, which was usually more noticeable about the middle or toward the end of the period of exposure. The maximum rise was usually 0.3° to 2.5° C. above normal. The clinical symptoms produced were those of a pneumonia. Autopsy and microscopical study showed chiefly catarrhal broncho pneumonia, associated in some cases with fibrino-purulent pleuritis and pericarditis. Lower percentage concentrations of ammonia in the inspired air more often caused pleuro-pneumonia, and higher percentage concentrations only catarrhal broncho-pneumonia. Rabbits were found to be less sensitive to the presence of ammonia in the inspired air than guinea pigs. Guinea pigs were able to tolerate 0.15 percent of ammonia for a month without visible external disturbance or apparent macroscopical changes in the lungs at autopsy; but at 0.25 percent of ammonia gas in the chamber, lesions in the lungs of guinea pigs were noticed. It seems, therefore, that the concentration of ammonia for domestic animals should be lower than 0.25 percent

[More] The localized occurrence of acute dermatitis in the face and lower arms of 8 women workers engaged in the production of synthetic resins is reported. Some workers suffered from conjunctivitis and bronchitis. The dermatitis is classified as grave with intensive reddening, swelling and moistening. The major constituents for the production of the synthetic resin are ammonia (7664417), carbolic-acid (108952) and formaldehyde (50000). Vapors developed during the boiling process and were not adequately taken up by the ventilation in the work area. Treatment of the condition consisted of applying Burow's solution of one part alumina-acetate and nine parts water. When the acute appearance stopped, a bandage was applied with 3 percent Bor-Lanolin cream or Lassar's zinc paste. The synthetic resin is used in the production of billiard balls, requisites for smokers, buttons, handles for umbrellas and canes and for the isolation of such materials as cables. [More] To improve the quality standard for Compound Luotuopengzi Ointments(Semen Pegani,Se-men Hyoscyami,Colchicum autumnale).METHODS:Semen Pegani and Semen Hyoscyami were identified by TLC.The HPLC-quantitative analysis was carried out on a column of Phenomenex Luna C18(5 μm,250 mm ×4.6 mm ID),atropine and scopolamine were determined using methol-water(20 ∶ 80,the water solution contained 0.02 mmoL/L of sodium acetate,0.2 mL/L of triethylamine,4 mL/L of tetrahydrofuran and adjusted to pH 6.0 with acetic acid) as the mobile phase with UV detection at 210 nm.Colchicine was determined using methanol-0.05 moL/L potassium dihydrogen phosphate(45 ∶ 55) as the mobile phase with UV detection at 350 nm.RESULTS:The linear ranges of atropine,scopolamine and colcihcine were in the ranges of 0.131 6-1.316 μg(r =0.999 8),0.063 6-0.636 μg(r =0.999 8),and 0.081 76-0.817 6 μg(r =0.999 6),respectively.The average recove-ries of atropine,scopolamine and colchicine were 97.6%,97.7% and 96.3%,respectively.CONCLUSION:The identification and assay methods are simple,accurate,exclusive and with good reproducibility.The improved quality standards can be used to control the quality of this product effectively.
