The chemicals in this group contain chains of six perfluorinated carbons, terminated with a carboxylate group. They have been assessed in a group because both chemicals are expected to dissociate into the perfluoroheptanoate anion in the aquatic environment.

The two chemicals in this group have a perfluorinated carbon chain that is intermediate in length between the long-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (i.e. acids containing seven or more perfluorinated carbons) and the short-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (i.e. acids containing a chain of five, four or three perfluorinated carbons). The relative length of the carbon chain in perfluoroheptanoic acid is significant because the immediate long-chain homologue, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), has been identified as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) according to domestic environmental hazard criteria. Chemicals with these hazard characteristics are of high concern to the environment and PFOA (and substances which may degrade to PFOA) are subject to increasingly stringent regulatory controls in other developed countries (NICNAS, 2015f).

However, the short-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (including the immediate short-chain homologue, perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA)) are not bioaccumulative and not toxic based on the available information, and they are considered to pose lower overall concerns for the environment than their long-chain homologues (NICNAS, 2015a). It is not currently clear whether the environmental hazards for the intermediate chain-length acids are comparable to the homologous long-chain or to the short-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids in this series.

Under the NICNAS action plan for assessing and managing chemicals that could degrade to perfluorinated carboxylic acids, perfluoroalkyl sulfonates and similar chemicals, hazard information for PFOA is used to estimate the hazard of perfluorocarboxylic acid (PFCA) degradation products (with four or more perfluorinated carbons), unless sufficient toxicological data are available to demonstrate a lower toxicity profile. More information on the plan can be found in Appendix G of the NICNAS Handbook for Notifiers on the NICNAS website (NICNAS, 2015b).

This assessment will evaluate:

a) the properties of the chemicals in this group and compare them with short- and long-chain homologues; and

b) whether there are sufficient data to use in place of the default assumptions of the action plan.

The assessment of these chemicals as a group also provides additional relevant information for the risk assessment of other per- and poly-fluorinated substances containing a chain of at least six perfluorinated carbons that may degrade to PFHpA in the environment.

Evaluation of Helically Coiled and Knitted Open Tubular Reactors for the Efficient Post-Column Determination of Tetrodotoxin by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

[More] A postcolumn fluorescence reaction system for the high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) determination of tetrodotoxin in the silver-cheeked toadfish Lagocephalus sceleratus is discussed theoretically and investigated experimentally. Ion-pair chromatography with volatile ammonium perfluoroheptanoate was used for the separation of tetrodotoxin and 4,9-anhydrotetrodotoxin. The postcolumn reaction was based on the tetrodotoxin conversion to a quinazoline fluorescent compound under strong alkaline conditions. All postcolumn parameters were optimized that affected the sensitivity, dispersion, and stability. Helically coiled and knitted open tubular reactors composed of polyetheretherketone were constructed and characterized in detail. The performance of these reactors was evaluated on the basis of sensitivity and dispersion. Their optimal design is reported. The knitted reactors were more efficient than the relevant helically coiled reactors when higher reaction times are required. A 1500-mu L polyetheretherketone knitted coil with 0.010 internal diameter was optimum exhibiting higher pressure tolerances than Teflon coils. The HPLC postcolumn reaction method was evaluated in terms of linearity, sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and ruggedness. The linear dynamic ranges for tetrodotoxin and 4,9-anhydrotetrodotoxin were 40-3000 and 80-3000 ppb, respectively. The limits of detection and quantification were 12 and 41 ppb, respectively, for tetrodotoxin and 26 and 85 ppb, respectively, for 4,9-anhydrotetrodotoxin. The accuracy was evaluated by recovery measurements and the values for tetrodotoxin were between 90.7 and 93.6%. The use of a volatile perfuorocarboxylic acid as an ion-pair reagent allows confirmation of analytes in sample matrix by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry using identical mobile phase conditions.

Simultaneous Determination of Nine Perfluorinated Carboxylic Acids in Water by Gas Chromatography with Electron Capture Detector

PFCAs were firstly converted to amide derivative products using 2,4. difluoroaniline (2,4-DFA) as derivatizing agent and N, N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as dehydrating agent. Then the amide derivative products were determined by ECD after separation with TR-5 capillary. column chromatography. The experimental conditions in derivatization of PFCAs were optimized, including the dosage of 2,4-DFA and DCC, reaction solvent, reaction temperature and reaction time. The optimal derivatization parameters were obtained. The results showed that the linear correlation coefficients of nine derivative products of PFCAs were higher than 0.99 under the optimized experimental conditions. The limits of detection were 0.62 - 1.38. mu g/L, while the relative standard derivations RSDs were 1.3% - 7.5%. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of PFCAs in municipal sewage. It was found that the municipal sewage contained trace PFCAs which mainly existed in the form of perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA), perfloroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) and pentadecafluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The recoveries of actual samples were between 84.4% and 120.9%. The method was stable and reliable with low cost, and it could meet the simultaneous determination of several PFCAs in water samples. This study provided technical support for the pollution assessment of perfluorinated compounds in water.

Preparation of single-site tin(IV) compounds and their use in the polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone

The synthesized complexes were fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-, C-13-NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), mass spectroscopies (MS) and elemental analysis. These tin complexes were used as catalysts for the ring opening polymerization of epsilon-caplolactone and the conversion of monomers to polymers was completed in just 1 h. The structures of polymers were characterized by a combination of spectroscopic techniques (NMR, FTIR, MS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and gel permeation chromatography. In this study, the epsilon-caplolactone polymers with different average molecular weights between 5000 and 40,000 Da having a regular structure were obtained.

Highly efficient and stable Zr-doped nanocrystalline PbO2 electrode for mineralization of perfluorooctanoic acid in a sequential treatment system

The Zr-PbO2 electrode doped at 75°C (75-Zr-PbO2) featured high oxygen evolution overpotential, large effective area and good electrocatalytic performance. The oxygen evolution potential and the effective area of 75-Zr-PbO2 achieved 1.91V (vs. SCE) and 9.1cm(2), respectively. The removal efficiency and the defluorination ratio of PFOA reached 97.0% and 88.1% after 90min electrolysis. The primary mineralization products (i.e., F(-) and intermediates) and their change trends were determined. The 75-Zr-PbO2 electrode was introduced to sequentially treat the PFOA wastewater. In an 116h of 75-Zr-PbO2 electrocatalysis sequential process, the PFOA, PFHpA, PFHxA, PFPeA, PFBA, PFPrA, TFA, and TOC concentrations were reduced to below 30, 2.5, 1.3, 1.0, 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, and 9mgL(-1), respectively, demonstrating the promising application of the sequential treatment system for the treatment of PFOA wastewater.

Serum concentrations of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and factors associated with exposure in the general adult population in South Korea

[More] Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are ubiquitous contaminants found worldwide, including in South Korea. As a result, they are frequently detected in Koreans. However, there is limited representative data and information on potential sources in Korea. Therefore, we measured the serum concentrations of ten PFASs in nationally representative samples of the Korean population (n=1874, 18-69 years) and evaluated the factors associated with their exposure. Serum PFOS, PFDA, PFOA, and PFNA were detected in nearly all participants (83.1-99.9%). However, serum PFPA, PFHxA, and PFHpA were almost undetected (<0.5% of participants). PFOS had the highest population-weighted geometric mean of 10.23ng/mL (95% CI: 9.99-10.47), which was followed by PFOA with 2.85ng/mL (95% CI: 2.73-2.97) and PFDA with 2.17ng/mL (95% CI: 2.12-2.23). PFNA, PFDA, PFHxS, PFOA, and PFOS concentrations were higher in males (p<0.001) and older adults (p<0.001). PFNA was higher in those who used wax, polish, and water-resistant materials (adjusted proportional change=1.14; 95% CI: 1.08-1.22), and those who ate cooked fish (1.16; 95% CI: 1.03-1.31) compared to those who ate nearly no fish. PFDA was higher in those who used herbicides and pesticides (1.05; 95% CI: 1.02-1.09), those who drank beverages in a plastic bag on a daily basis (1.10; 95% CI: 1.03-1.19), and those who ate raw fish (1.15; 95% CI: 1.03-1.29) or cooked fish (1.13; 95% CI: 1.05-1.23) compared to those who ate nearly no fish. PFHxS was higher in those who used traditional Korean health supplement foods (1.08; 95% CI: 1.01-1.15). PFOA was higher in those who used plastic wrap in a microwave daily or weekly (1.08; 95% CI: 1.00-1.16), and those who used disposable paper cups (1.07; 95% CI: 1.01-1.13). PFOS was lower in underweight participants (0.84; 95%CI: 0.75-0.93) compared to those who were obese, and higher in those who exercised regularly (1.08; 95% CI: 1.03-1.14) or irregularly (1.06, 95% CI: 1.01-1.12) compared to those who did not exercise. Subjects who used severely damaged Teflon appliances had lower concentrations of PFOA (0.78, 95% CI: 0.65-0.95), while regular use of Gore-Tex goods was related to higher PFNA (1.15, 95% CI: 1.03-1.28) and PFDA (1.11; 95% CI: 1.02-1.20) levels. These findings suggest that most Koreans are frequently exposed to PFASs, and that serum concentrations of PFASs vary with age, sex, and exposure factors.

Temporal trends of PFSAs, PFCAs and selected precursors in Australian serum from 2002 to 2013

To date, only a subset of these PFASs have been studied thoroughly in the general population. In this study, pooled serum samples from Australia collected in 2002-2013 were analyzed for PFASs according to gender and age (age categories of 0-4 years, 5-15 years, 16-30 years, 31-45 years, 46-60 years, and >60 years), in total 54 pooled samples and 4920 individuals. Compound classes included were perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs), and two groups of PFCA precursor compounds; polyfluoroalkyl phosphate diesters (diPAPs), and fluorotelomer sulfonic acids (FTSAs). Several PFASs that were not reported in previous studies of Australian serum samples were found in this sample set including; diPAPs, FTSAs, perfluoropentane sulfonic acid (PFPeS), perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid (PFHpS), perfluoroheptane carboxylic acid (PFHpA), perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA), perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA), and perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA). Various temporal trends were observed with a significant reduction (p < 0.05) between 2002 and 2013 for 8:2 FTSA, perflurohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), PFHpS, PFOS, and perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA). Levels of longer-chained PFDA and PFUnDA started to decrease more recently, between 2006 and 2013, while PFDoDA increased during the same time period. Higher levels in younger age groups (0-4 and 5-15 years) compared to adults (>15 years) were found for 8:2 FTSA and PFHpA, while levels of PFHpS, PFOS, PFUnDA, PFDoDA and PFTrDA were higher in adult age groups compared to younger age groups. Gender-specific patterns were seen for PFOA, PFHxS, PFHpS and PFOS, where levels were lower in women. Changes in manufacturing processes were reflected in the temporal time trends, and differences in bioaccumulation potential between homologues could be associated with age trends. Our results emphasize the importance of including emerging classes of PFASs in biomonitoring studies.

Brominated flame retardants and perfluoroalkyl acids in groundwater, tile drainage, soil, and crop grain following a high application of municipal biosolids to a field

Concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs; BDE-47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, -197, -207, -209), other brominated flame retardants (BFRs; HBB, PBEB, DBDPE, BTBPE) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs; PFHxS, PFOS, PFDS, PFOSA, PFHpA, PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnA, PFDoA, PFTA) were monitored in tile drainage, groundwater (2m, 4m and 6m depth), soil cores (0-0.3m) pre- and post-application, DMB aggregates incorporated into the soil post-application, and in wheat (Triticum spp.) planted post-application. Several compounds were detected in soil and water pre-application and on a reference field plot. PBDEs, other BFRs and PFAAs were detected in tile drainage and 2m groundwater throughout the post-application study period; a few PBDEs were also detected sporadically at lower depths in groundwater. Some of these compounds had not been detected pre-application, while some exceeded reference field plot/pre-application levels (some significantly (p<0.05) in tile drainage); both cases indicating biosolid-based water contamination. In DMB aggregates, several PBDE congeners were found to have dissipated exponentially, with reductions >90% in many of them within 1year post-application. Exponential dissipation of other BFRs and PFAAs in DMB aggregates were not significant. No PBDEs, other BFRs, or PFAAs were detected in wheat grain.

Accumulation of Perfluoroalkylated Substances in Oceanic Plankton

[More] The bioaccumulation of perfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs) in plankton has previously been evaluated only in freshwater and regional seas, but not for the large oligotrophic global oceans. Plankton samples from the tropical and subtropical Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans were collected during the Malaspina 2010 circumnavigation expedition, and analyzed for 14 ionizable PFASs, including perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and their respective linear and branched isomers. PFOA and PFOS concentrations in plankton ranged from 0.1 to 43 ng gdw(-1) and from 0.5 to 6.7 ng gdw(-1), respectively. The relative abundance of branched PFOA in the northern hemisphere was correlated with distance to North America, consistent with the historical production and coherent with previously reported patterns in seawater. The plankton samples showing the highest PFOS concentrations also presented the largest relative abundances of branched PFOS, suggesting a selective cycling/fractionation of branched PFOS in the surface ocean mediated by plankton. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for plankton were calculated for six PFASs, including short chain PFASs. PFASs Log BAFs (wet weight) ranged from 2.6 ± 0.8 for perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), to 4.4 ± 0.6 for perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA). The vertical transport of PFASs due to the settling of organic matter bound PFAS (biological pump) was estimated from an organic matter settling fluxes climatology and the PFAS concentrations in plankton. The global average sinking fluxes were 0.8 ± 1.3 ng m(-2)d(-1) for PFOA, and 1.1 ± 2.1 ng m(-2)d(-1) for PFOS. The residence times of PFAS in the surface ocean, assuming the biological pump as the unique sink, showed a wide range of variability, from few years to millennia, depending on the sampling site and individual compound. Further process-based studies are needed to constrain the oceanic sink of PFAS.
