From the rates and products obtained in thermal dimerizations of chloroprene and other dienes,it is proposed that two mechanisms are operative-one which is probably concerted and electrocyclic in nature, requiring at least one cisoid diene unit, and leading to vinylcyclohexenes, the other diradical in nature, leading largely to
divinylcyclobutanes, and appreciable only when favorable substitution is present.
