The deterioration and sensitivity of s-diphenylcarbazide, a widely used colorimetric reagent for chromium (7440473), were studied in a variety of solutions involving seven organic solvents. Nonaqueous ethyl-acetate (141786) and acetone (67641) solutions were stable for months; methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), methyl-cellosolve (109864), and 2-propanol (67630) solutions were usable for 1 to 2 weeks. Aqueous solutions, solvents tending to be basic, and solvents containing traces of water or basic impurities do not make good solvents for stock solutions of the colorimetric reagent.
