Abstract
A review paper summarising the evidence supporting control limits on asbestos in the United Kingdom. It covers: trends in asbestos imports (the import of amosite had virtually ceased); asbestos-related diseases (asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma being strongly correlated with exposure to asbestos fibres, but also cancers of the larynx and the alimentary tract); relationship of health effects to fibre type; dose-response relationships; implications for the industrial control limit of crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile; measurement problems.
