Abstract
A TLV-TWA of 100 ppm (434 mg/m3) and a TLV-STEL of 125 ppm (543 mg/m3) are recommended for occupational exposure to ethyl benzene to minimize the potential for eye and skin irritation. This value also should provide significant protection against central nervous system depression, as well as potential liver and kidney damage. Based on carcinogenic responses observed in rats and mice exposed to ethyl benzene by inhalation, this TLV is under review. Sufficient data were not available to recommend Skin or SEN notations. Ethyl benzene is a substance for which Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs) have been recommended (see BEI Documentation for Ethyl Benzene). At this printing, the TLVs for ethyl benzene were under review.
