An update on environmental requirements affecting the electrical and electronic products sector was presented. It was indicated that the European Commission should present a proposal to include the two additional Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) categories under the scope of Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) once scientific and technical evidence demonstrated that this was feasible. The WEEE Directives required producers of electrical and electronic equipment to take end-of-life responsibility for the products they had put on the market in the European Union (EU). It was indicated that the governments outside the EU were following Europe lead in regulating hazardous substances, with several adopting provisions that were similar to the RoHS Directives.
