The structures of the polyion complex Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film, in particular the effects of the side-chain of the polymer cation on the structure, were investigated by using X-ray diffraction, ellipsometry, Fourier-transform infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy and contact angle measurement. It was found that the side-chain of polymer cations affects the layered structure and surface structure of polyion complex LB films, and that the LB film of perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUA)-poly(vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride) containing a longer side-chain has a more disordered structure than those of PFUA-poly(vinylamine) and PFUA-poly(allylamine), which have a well-ordered layered structure.
