Sustainable process design for TAEE synthesis process is performed by comparing three case studies (CS1, CS2 and CS3) based on two PFDs with different separation section (classical water-ethanol extraction method and pressure swing distillation) and different recycle streams. Heat integration (HI) of distillation columns is considered for two of the case studies. Feedstock for TAEE production process is represented by Light Cycle Naphtha enriched in 2-methyl-1-butene and 2-methyl-2-butene. Results point out that best performance is achieved for CS2 (pressure swing distillation and EtOH recycle): no danger to contaminate gasoline with water, EtOH recovery, and better energy performance.
