Abstract
Until the 1950s the blue walleye, once abundant in Lake Erie (less so in Lake Ontario), was an important economic resource for commercial fishermen, who referred to it as blue pike. A popular sport fish as well, under the name blue pickeral, the blue walleye received no special protection, and in 1959 commercial fishing of it collapsed. Smaller than the yellow walleye, it was less tolerant of low oxygen concentration and preferred cooler, deeper waters. Accelerated eutrophication in the Great Lakes from agricultural, urban, and industrial activity, leading to low oxygen conditions, was probably a factor contributing to the disappearance of the walleye. This subspecies is now listed as extinct.
