9-Nitroanisole forms a 1:1 inclusion complex with beta-cyclodextrin in aqueous buffer solution at pH 12. The complex formation constant is 99+/-4 M(-1) Complexation provides effective protection of triplet 3-nitroanisole against quenching by hydroxide as demonstrated by the observed reduction in the initial rate of product formation in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin compared with that in homogeneous buffer solution. Neither tert-butanol (1% v/v) nor sodium dodecylsulphate surfactant (at or below the critical micelle concentration) changes the rate of photohydroxylation in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin from that observed in homogeneous solution.
