Abstract Executive Summary, Conclusion: A cross-sectional health survey of nine Koppers coal tar plants was carried out to determine the health status of the workers. Confounding variables such as seasonal variation, wide geographic distribution of plant locations, differences in management and union cooperation, some lack of uniformity in testing equipment and technique, as well as the variety of coal tar products produced at these plants all contributed to the difficulty of interpreting the data collected in these studies. However, no cancers were observed, and kidney and blood studies were essentially within normal limits. The x-ray findings were negative, but pulmonary function tests revealed the possibility of some instinctive deficits. The only significant finding was the presence of some skin conditions which might be associated with exposure to coal tar products.
