Abstract The uses, quantities produced, physical and chemical properties, reactions, synthesis, determination, physiological effects, and metabolism of aldehydes are discussed, with special reference to formaldehyde (50000), paraformaldehyde, a solid polymer of formaldehyde, resinous products such as phenol-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde (13236845), urea-formaldehyde (1339646), acetaldehyde, chloral (75876), hexamethylene-tetramine (100970), sodium-formaldehyde-sulfoxylate (149440) and zinc-formaldehyde-sulfoxylate (1337924), benzaldehyde (100527) and other ortho-chlorobenzaldehyde(89985), anisaldehyde (50984526), citronellal (106230), hydroxy-citronellal (107755), piperonal (120570), geranial (141275), and veratraldehyde (120149). Inhalation of formaldehyde by animals causes prompt and severe irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract. The median lethal concentration for a 30 minute exposure is about 800ppm in the rat. Workers in factories making urea and formaldehyde resins, glues, and molding powders are likely to develop eczematous reactions of the face, neck, scrotum, flexor surfaces of the arms and eyelid.
