Abstract Numerous studies have been performed concerning exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) to airway inflammation and bronchial responsiveness, but studies about the predictive value of FeNO for bronchial responsiveness according to age are scarce. The aim of this study is to determine the predictive value of FeNO for bronchial responsiveness according to age. METHODS: The bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) in 468 patients (190 female, 278male, range 5-12 year-old) with asthma was evaluated during a stable period. A challenge test was performed with acetylcholine chloride (Ach). The patient inhaled Ach dilution until more than 20% decrease of FEV1. We obtained the provocation concentration of Ach producing a 20% decrease in FEV1 (PC20). The FeNO was examined by the recommended on-line 20 method. FENO and lung function were performed before Ach challenge test. RESULTS: FeNO cut-off values for BHR (PC <0.5mg/mL) could be determined according to age with or without current inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment. *Table in pdf CONCLUSION: Measurement of FeNO is a simple, and time- and resource –efficient tool that may be used to screen for BHR in asthmatic children according to age and optimizes the resources for BHR testing in pediatric asthma monitoring.
