Abstract To identify and characterize the major factors affecting indoor air quality and contributing to sick building classification, a study was conducted in which air quality surveys were taken of 26 buildings in Switzerland. The survey began with interviews of the personnel responsible for the building maintenance at each site, in which details of air system operation and maintenance routines were addressed. Walk through surveys and visual inspections were conducted of ventilation systems when possible. Air samples were taken from each site and analyzed for microbe and particle content. Quantitative analyses included those for respirable airborne particles, carbon-dioxide (124389) levels, carbon-monoxide (630080) concentrations, airborne nicotine (54115), temperature and relative humidity. Among the most common problems contributing to air quality reduction were a failure to open windows, low ventilation rates, excessive dust levels and inadequate maintenance of air handling units. High levels of environmental tobacco smoke and asbestos (1332214) fiber release were also found in multiple sites. From this investigation, the authors conclude that improvements in air handling unit hygiene and ventilation rates are needed to reduce air quality health hazards in Swiss buildings.
