Abstract BIOSIS COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Propranolol and one of its metabolites, propranolol glycol, were oxidized with N-bromosuccinimide in acidic and neutral solutions under irradiation from a mercury lamp. Mercuric acetate was used to prevent the bromination of the products. After an oxidation of one hour the products were isolated by extraction, preparative TLC and flash chromatography. The main products, identified by spectrometric methods, were 1,4-naphthoquinone, 2,3-dibromo-1,4-naphthoquinone and 2,4-dibromo-1-naphthol. 8-Bromo-2-hydroxy- and 2-bromo-1,4-naphthoquinone were isolated in traces.
