| Abstract | Abstract: Previous research about the treatment of lead poisoning using an array of antioxidants, such as EDTA, penicillamine (Pen), selenocysteine (Sel), succimer, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA) showed differences in chelating abilities and levels of oxidative stress reduction. Chelation effects of these antioxidants to Pb(Ⅱ) were studied in vitro. Experiments were conducted at 0°C to 10°C, pH= 7.4 and with a 0.09% NaCl solution as the background electrolyte. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to determine the stoichiometry of the metal-to-ligand complexation within the antioxidant-Pb chelation. X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) was adopted as a direct and quick way to predict the effectiveness of antioxidants. NACA was found to be the most effective antioxidant for chelating Pb(Ⅱ) in the series. in addition, XPS confirmed that NACA reacted with Pb more easily by forming precipitates, as compared to the other antioxidants studied. These findings also demonstrate that XPS is a promising method for efficient, rapid evaluation of antioxidant Pb binding in vitro. |
