| Abstract | A TLV TWA of 5 mg/m3 is recommended for occupational exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). This value is intended to minimize the potential for irritation and possible neurotoxicity. DEHP is considered a substance of low toxicity by all routes of exposure. An A3, Confirmed Animal Carcinogen with Unknown Relevance to Humans, notation is assigned based on the liver tumors reported in rats and mice fed DEHP in their diets. Differences in the metabolic pathways of rodents and primates for DEHP and its metabolites may account for the liver cancer observed in rats and mice. Sufficient data were not available to recommend Skin or SEN notations or a TLV-STEL. |
