Abstract The present paper is a report on the synthesis of some new organotin(IV) complexes by the reactions of bis(tributyltin)oxide and semicarbazones/thiosemicarbazones using benzene as reaction medium. Semicarbazones and thiosemicarbazones are prepared by condensation of 4-acetylbiphenyl, 2-acetylflurene, 9-acetylanthracene, anthraldehyde and 4-flouro-acetophenone with semicarbazide hydrochloride and thiosemicarbazide in ethanol. Monomeric nature of these complexes has been confirmed on the basis of their molecular weight determination. Purity of the complexes has been confirmed by thin layer chromatography. Non electrolytic nature of complexes has been detected by their conductance measurement. The bonding pattern and geometry of tin complexes are characterized by spectroscopic studies (IR, UV, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, Sn-119 NMR, spectral studies). The investigated compounds and the ligands were tested against bacterial and fungal species. The bacteria and fungi used in these investigations are Escherichia coli, Staphylococus aureus, Proteus milamilis, Bacillus thurengiensis (bacteria) and F. oxysporum, A. flavus, A. niger, R. phaseoli (fungi). The metal complexes have higher activity than the free ligands.
