| Abstract | The utilisation of mixtures consisting of dibenzofuran and 3-hydroxydibenzofuran or dibenzofuran and 3-chlorodibenzofuran by the dibenzofuran degrading strain Sphingomonas sp. HH69 was investigated in this study. Although strain HH69 was shown to mineralise these mixtures simultaneously, concentrations above 45 mg/l 3-hydroxydibenzofuran in the presence of 450 mg/l dibenzofuran completely inhibited growth. Acetate-grown cells of HH69 showed a diauxic-like growth in media containing different concentrations of 3-hydroxydibenzofuran in the presence of acetate. Only after 3-hydroxydibenzofuran was completely consumed, growth started with acetate as carbon source. |
