Abstract
The Photovac 10S series of photoionization gas chromatographs was described with special emphasis on the 10S70 communications model for remote industrial monitoring. The detector operated at room temperature using air as the carrier gas and exhibited unprecedented sensitivity to a large number of gases and solvent vapors. The entire system fit in a briefcase sized aluminum case and weighed about 20 kilograms. The 10S70 not only had communications capability but could be remotely controlled, leading to considerable time savings for the industrial hygienist. The 10S70 computer incorporated its own four color printer plotter and 32 character alphanumeric keyboard with liquid crystal display. An alarm would sound with the reading printed in red when a predetermined threshold value was exceeded. The precise time and date of an incident would be indicated. The detector could identify most organic vapors and various other hazardous substances such as hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), arsine (7784421), and phosphine (7803512). Benzene (71432) was detectable at levels below 0.1 part per billion in air. Minimum detectable levels in parts per million for other compounds were acrylonitrile (107131), 0.25; ethylene-oxide (75218), 0.01; carbon-disulfide (75150), 0.01; formaldehyde (50000), 1; dichloromethane (75092), 0.1; ethylene-glycol (107211), 0.05; styrene (100425), 0.01; 2-ethyl-methoxyacetate, 0.05; trichloroethane (71556), 0.01; trichloroethylene (79016), 0.01; vinylidine-chloride (75354), 0.001; and vinyl-chloride (75014) monomer, 0.001.
