Abstract
Biofiltration of waste gas stream containing acetone was investigated in this study. The experiments were conducted in a laboratory scale reactor with a mixture of compost and porous clay particles as the filter material. The concentration of acetone in the inlet gas was varied from 0.62 to 4.17 g/m super(3) (257-1730 ppmv), whereas the gas superficial velocity ranged from 0.66 to 4.21 cm/s. It was found that the acetone elimination capacity of this biofilter could reach up to 82 g/(m super(3) h). A mathematical model was also developed by taking into account double-substrate limiting microkinetics, diffusion of the substrates in the biofilm, and the flow pattern of the bulk gas phase. According to this model, the effective specific surface area declined from 298 to 118 L/m during a 6-month operation. Accurate predictions of the elimination capacity of the biofilter under various operating conditions could be made by taking into consideration the variations of the effective specific surface area.
