HMTC Samples of milk products, human milk, and vegetables were collected in 1983 from various areas of northern Greece to test for the presence of organochlorines. Organochlorine pesticides accumulate in plants and organisms and are transported to humans via the food chain. High levels of organochlorine compounds are toxic; a few of the compounds are carcinogenic to small animals. The use of DDT and other organochlorine compounds in Greece was restricted in l972, but the 1983 collection samples showed trace levels of DDT and lindane. The organochlorine levels, however, were lower than the levels found in Germany and Sweden. The levels were also lower than the permissible levels recommended by the World Health Organization.
