Abstract
The reaction between chlorine dioxide and styrene, alpha-methylstyrene and trans-beta-methylstyrene in water has been carried out. The influence of temperature, ratio between initial concentrations of chlorine dioxide and the organic considered and pH has been studied. While the increase of the first two variables leads to increases of conversion of the organics studied, pH does not affect the reaction rate. The apparent stoichiometric ratio was found to be 2 and 1 mol of chlorine dioxide per mol of styrene and methylstyrenes, respectively. At high values of the initial reactant concentration ratio stoichiometric values increase with the increasing reaction time probably due to consumption of chlorine dioxide in secondary reactions. A kinetic study was also under-taken by fitting the rate data to a second order kinetic equation (first order with respect to chlorine dioxide and the organic compound). Rate constants were determined at different temperatures and expressed as a function of this variable as follows:Styrene-chlorine dioxide reaction: k = 1.15 x 10(11) exp(-6643/T), l.mol.-1min-1 alpha-methylstyrene-chlorine dioxide reaction: k = 1.06 x 10(7) exp(-3952/T), l.mol.-1min-1 trans-beta-methylstyrene-chlorine dioxide reaction: k = 5.58 x 10(8) exp(-4556/T), l.mol.-1min-1
