Abstract
White Books describing the condition of the natural environment in Russia were initiated in 1992. An overview is presented of the ecological conditions in the country in terms of the exploitation of timber resources and oil and gas; ecological diseases, such as Bykovka", instantaneous balding, the development of nervous tics in children living in the vicinity of several petroleum-processing plants, babies born with bright yellow-colored skin and retarded mental and physical abilities, and the reduction in the mean life expectancy; and specific features of pollution, including radiological contamination, pesticides, and several new substances, such as dioxanes, beryllium, and plutonium. Objectives are recommended for addressing the pollution problem in Russia, including the restructuring of the former Soviet society, methods to address the overexploitation of resources and energy, and a transition to sustainable development.
