Cancer of the uterin cervix is the second most frequent
cancer after breast cancer in Morocco and represents a public health problem. Human Papilloma
Virus is strongly incriminated in the genesis of uterin cervix cancer especially types 16 and 18.
Our study is the first one to be done entirely in Morocco and cervical samples were taken without
any presemption of the diagnosis and fixed in buffered formaldehyde. Histopathologic diagnosis
was made using hemateineosin stain and most lesions were found to be invasive carcinomas. HPV
type 16 was the most frequent to be found using PCR amplification and hybridization with the DNA
isolated from paraffin-embedded biopsies. Since most HPV lesions will not progress to cancer due
to host immune response, the authors discuss the possible indications of HPV testing according to
the natural history of HPV infection and the patients age. Until the advent of HPV vaccination
and in the absence of a national screening program, the only means for preventing uterin cervix
cancer remains individual screening.
