Abstract
The effects of dieldrin (60571) and gamma-benzene-hexachloride (58899) (gBHC) on serum proteins and protein bound iodine (PBI) were studied in rabbits. Male rabbits were administered 0 or 50 parts per million dieldrin or gBHC in their drinking water for 5 weeks. Some rabbits were given weekly intravenous injections of Salmonella-typhimurium bacteria starting 2 weeks after the beginning of the regimen. The animals were weighed at the beginning and end of the experiment. Mortality was recorded. The rabbits were bled 1 week after the last dose. Plasma dieldrin and gBHC concentrations were determined. Serum gamma globulin fractions, albumin, and PBI were measured. One of 10 rabbits receiving Salmonella and 3 of 12 rabbits given dieldrin plus Salmonella died. Animals given dieldrin or dieldrin plus Salmonella had significantly lower body weight gains than the controls. Plasma dieldrin and gBHC concentrations were reduced in animals given Salmonella. Serum albumin concentrations were significantly increased by dieldrin or gBHC; these increases were inhibited by Salmonella. The tendency of the 7S fraction of serum gamma-globulin to increase after Salmonella injection was countered by dieldrin and gBHC. Dieldrin and gBHC significantly reduced serum PBI. The authors suggest that the decrease in PBI induced by dieldrin of gBHC may be due to an increase in thyroxine metabolism.
