Abstract
The aim of this paper is to evaluate nitrate removal performance using various proportion of maifan stone (MFS) and activated carbon (AC) as bioflim carrier under different C/N ratios. Four columns filled with mixed maifan stone and activated carbon in different proportion (1/0, 2/1, 1/1, 1/2) were used as denitrification reactors in an up-flow mode. NO3--N, NO2--N, NH3-N, and pH were tested at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 16h. The indication show that nitrate removal efficiency reaches above 99.5% for all the columns at the C/N ratio of 1 and 2(methanol as carbon source). When the C/N ratio is kept at 0.9 and 0.8, the nitrate removal efficiency of column1 is about 90%, a little lower than other three columns, however, the nitrite accumulation and ammonia production for column 1 is the least of the four columns. The results proved that no extra phosphorous and trace elements are needed due to the leaching performance of MFS. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
