A one-pot procedure for the synthesis of 4-arylidene-2-phenyl-5(4H)oxazolones directly from aryl aldehyde bisulfite adducts in the absence of Ac(2)O in good to excellent yields using phosphoryl chloride is reported. In addition, the observed chemoselectivity can be considered as a noteworthy advantage of this method.
