In experiments of isolated hearts it had been shown that NO
produced by NOS in physiological concentration is an effective inhibitor of mPTP opening and a
modulator of oxygen cost of myocardial work. Impaired synthesis and lack of NO may be a reason of
increased oxygen cost of myocardial work during ischemia-reperfusion. Blockade of mPTP opening
abolishes effects of NO on oxygen cost of myocardial work.
