Lanolin, from wool wax or grease, is a natural product
secreted by sheeps, which covers wool fibres to protect them from external agents. This is the
reason why we find it dispersed in wool industrial washing baths, and it can be partially
recovered by centrifugation. In order to control the efficacy of scouring process and the lanolin
recovery, its content is periodically estimated in scouring baths. The most conventional method
is based on the liquid-liquid extraction (ELL), using carbon tetrachloride and isopropyl alcohol.
Recently, an alternative met-hod has been studied, the extraction in a solid phase (EFS), which
avoids the use of chloride solvents. In this work, it is carried out the qualitative and
quantitative analysis of the different families of lipid compounds that can be found in the
different fractions of lanolin obtained by the new method of extraction in solid phase (EFS).
Thin layer chromatography technique coupled to a flame ionisation detector (TLC/FID) have been
used for that purpose. The results are compared with the ones obtained with the conventional ELL
method.
