The literature available on allyl-glycidyl-ether (106923) (AGE) and isopropyl-glycidyl-ether (4016142) was reviewed with a view towards establishing a scientific basis for the setting of occupational health standards. AGE is used as a resin intermediate and a stabilizer of chlorinated compounds, vinyl resins, and rubber. IGE is used as a reactive diluent for epoxy resins, a stabilizer for organic compounds, and an intermediate for the synthesis of esters and ethers. AGE is classified as a moderate skin irritant to the skin of rabbits, and as a severe irritant to the rabbit eye. IGE is a moderate irritant to the skin and eye of rabbits. General symptoms include depression of the central nervous system, ataxia, and depressed motor activity. AGE has mutagenic properties and some evidence exists for the carcinogenic activity of AGE toward the nasal passage. Human data are scarce but some suggest that AGE is a skin irritant in man. No data for human exposure to IGE were available. The recommended health based occupational exposure limit is 0.5mg/m3 (0.1 parts per million) as an 8 hour time weighted average concentration for both AGE and IGE.
