Abstract
A method is described for the determination of guthion residues on fruits. Guthion (86500) is extracted from the crop with acetone (67641) and re-extracted with chloroform (67663) from acetone after dilution with water and acidification. The chloroform is removed by evaporation. The residue is dissolved in isopropanol (67630) and cleaned up on a chromatographic column. Guthion is hydrolyzed in alkaline solution to anthranilic-acid (118923), which is diazotized and coupled with N-(1-naphthyl)-ethylenediamine-dihydrochloride (1465254) to form a colored compound. The omission of alkaline hydrolysis reveals the presence of interfering substances, except for the ethyl homolog of guthion. In general, the recoveries obtained by this method are excellent, and the chromatographic clean-up procedure is necessary for precise results. With the exception of peaches, very little statistical data pertaining to crop blanks have been obtained in this study, and none at all for apples and pears. For this reason, the authors do not feel justified in recommending the method for determining guthion residues on fruit crops.
