BIOSIS COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Postemergence application of arsenal S (2(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl) nicotinic acid) at the rates of 0.4 and 0.2 kg a.i./ha in autumn planting cane, or preemergence application at the rates of 0.15 and 0.1 kg a.i./ha in spring planting cane resulted in good control of weeds. However, sugarcane was damaged seriously, and arsenal S was not suitable for weed control after planting of sugarcane. In the fallowing sugarcane field, application of arsenal S at the rates of 0.5, 0.75 or 1 kg a.i./ha was safe for the subsequent sugarcane, which was planted 96 or 118 days (Hsinying or Tainan) after application. Perennial weeds and annual weeds were controlled effectively, and application of preemergence herbicides was not necessary. The effect of arsenal S applied on roadsides lasted longer than that of glyphosate and paraquat. Arsenal S is good for weed control in non-cultivated landed.
