A cationic surfactant didecylmethylhydroxyethylammonium chloride (DMHAC10) was synthesized from didecylmethylamine (DMA10), hydrochloric acid and ethylene oxide (EO). The optimized reaction conditions were: m (isopropyl alcohol): m (water) = 1:1, n (DMA10): n (hydrochloric acid): n (EO) = 1:1.05:1.2, reaction temperature 70 degree C and reaction time 60 min. Structure of the product was characterized by super(1)HNMR, IR and elementary analysis. When the concentration of DMHAC10 was 100 mg/L and the killing time was 10 min, the killing ratios of staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-6538) and escherichia coli (ATCC -8099) were 99.4% and 99.6% respectively.
