Smoked Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) used for the study were obtained from Monday market, New Bussa and Malale market, Malale in Nigeria. These are the two major fish markets in Kainji Lake area. Malale Catfish and Tilapia were tagged MC and MT while New Bussa Catfish and Tilapia were tagged NC and NT respectively. Proximate analysis showed that MC and MT contain 50.93 and 53.78% protein; 17.42 and 18.06% fat; 12.57 and 7.67% ash; 11.3 and 11.1% moisture; 1528 and 1600KJ energy while NC and NT contain 71.47 and 67.39% protein; 17.53 and 16.43% fat; 9.42 and 7.56% ash; 13.1 and 9.2% moisture and 1881 and 1770KJ energy. For heavy metal concentrations, MC and MT contain 1.447 and 1.372 mu g/g copper, 1.636 and 1.551 mu g/g lead, 0.908 and 0.860 mu g/g Arsenic respectively, while NC and NT contain 1.438 and 0.901 mu g/g copper, 1.623 and 1.529 mu g/g lead, 0.451 and 0.848 mu g/g Arsenic respectively. Cadmium was not detected in any of the fish samples. The concentrations of heavy metals found in fish used for this study are within World Health Organization (WHO) standards for fish. This makes the fish safe for consumption.
