A silica glass powder was prepared Soi slip casting by grinding a selected vycor glass (composition 65SiO(2)-27.8B(2)O(3)-7.2Na(2)O (wt-%)) and the effects of particle size distribution, slip pH, and the addition of various deflocculants investigated on the properties of prepared slips. By employing a wide particle size distribution of fine particles (<22 mu m maximum particle dia.) stable slips with good casting properties were obtained containing 76% solids. It was found That the lowest viscosities were attained at pH 3-4 by using similar to 0.2% sodium tripolyphosphate as deflocculant. The effects of various factors on the thixotropic and dilatant behaviour of the slips were also studied. Effective deflocculation was found to play a significant role in the reduction of viscosity and the elimination of thixotropic behaviour. (C) 1997 The Institute of Materials.
