Abstract
Tungsten carbide was discovered one hundred years ago by
Henri Moissan. A short biography summarizes his life and work. Beforehand, we will follow the
historical sequence of discoveries from tungsten ores to the metal and its carbide. We will then
trace the beginnings of the history of tungsten carbide up to the discovery of cemented carbides
and the first industrial developments of them.
