A new method was developed for the selective determination of As(V) and As(III) in water samples by HG-AAS. The method is based oil the retention of inorganic arsenic in alumina microcolum and selective elution of As(III) with BAL (British Anti Lewisite or 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol), and of As(V) with 6M HCl. The detection limit after retention is 6 mug L-1 for As(III) and 4 mug L-1 for As(V). After preconcentration the L.D. can be drastically reduced by a factor of 100. The RSD was always lower than 5%. The analysis of mineral water and sea water revealed than only As(V) was present.
