Abstract
Trace elements are reviewed. Those which are essential are defined and identified. The functions and dietary sources of trace metals and general features of their metabolism are summarized. Detailed information is presented on the essential elements iodine (7553562), iron (7439896), zinc (7440666), copper (7440508), chromium (7440473), cobalt (7440484), manganese (7439965), and molybdenum (7439987). Those elements recently shown to be essential, vanadium (7440622), nickel (7440020), selenium (7782492), silicon (7440213), tin (7440315), and fluorine (7782414), are also considered. The author concludes that knowledge concerning trace metals has grown remarkably in the past few years.
