Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effects of the rotating basket mesh openings on the dissolution rates of 325 mg aspirin (I) tablets and tablets containing 325 mg of I with 150 or 300 mg of magnesium hydroxide (II) and aluminum hydroxide (III) were investigated using the USP rotating basket dissolution test. Results showed no visual clogging of the mesh openings in the experiments using the 20 mesh baskets and all 3 formulations met the same USP acceptance criteria as for plain I tablets. The dissolution studies for all formulations utilizing the 10 mesh baskets revealed that coarse particles and fragments of the disintegrated tablets promptly passed through the mesh openings and settled at the bottom of the dissolution flasks. Both I formulations containing II and III clogged the mesh openings in the 40 mesh baskets, leading to slower dissolution and an inability to achieve the USP dissolution criteria. Results show that the 20 mesh cloth is the optimum mesh size for I formulations containing II and III to satisfy the USP dissolution criteria.
