IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The rheological properties of dispersions of magnesium aluminum silicate (Veegum; I) and xanthan gum (Keltrol; II), combined in various ratios in deionized water, were compared with those of separate dispersions of each component to demonstrate the effects of II on the rheology of I. Results showed that minor inclusions of II in I dispersions provide synergisms in both viscosity and yield value, as well as modify the thixotropic nature of I. A smooth flow on extended storage was maintained by a reduced increase in viscosity on aging. It is suggested that blends with I:II ratios in the range of 9:1 to 2:1 be used to obtain formulas with good viscosity stability and smooth flow characteristics. Such blends are well suited to stabilizing all types of fluid suspensions, lotions, and makeup.
