IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effects of aluminum hydroxide (aluminium hydroxide; Alumigel) and milk on the absorption of norfloxacin (Baccidal), ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (Ciproxan), and tosufloxacin tosilate (Ozex) were investigated in three 3-way crossover trials, separated by 2 wk washout periods, conducted in 6 healthy male volunteers, ages 36-44 yr, who were randomized to receive single oral doses of the drugs after a standard breakfast either alone, with 1 g of aluminum hydroxide plus 180 ml water, or with 200 ml of milk. In the 3 studies, 5 subjects received two 100 mg tablets of norfloxacin, 5 received one 200 mg tablet of ciprofloxacin, and 6 received a single tablet of 150 mg of tosufloxacin. Drug concentrations were measured in serum. Aluminum hydroxide reduced the absorption of norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin but did not significantly affect the absorption of tosufloxacin. Milk reduced the absorption of norfloxacin but had no significant effect on the absorption of ciprofloxacin or tosufloxacin.
