Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The antacid capacity, rate of onset, and duration of action of aluminum (aluminium) powder alone or with magnesium oxide were studied in vitro and the effects of binder type and method of incorporation were studied in some chewable tablet formulations. The antacid performance of dihydroxyaluminum sodium carbonate (dihydroxyaluminium sodium carbonate; DASC) was superior to that of dihydroxyaluminum aminoacetate (dihydroxyaluminium aminoacetate; DAA) while aluminum hydroxide (aluminium hydroxide) gave unsatisfactory results. Magnesium oxide improved effectiveness in all cases. Generally, properties of DASC tablets were quite good in the presence of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), but the onset of action decreased when HPMC was used as a granulating solution. The reactivity of DAA decreased somewhat during tableting. It was concluded that HPMC is recommended as a binder in DASC chewable tablets containing magnesium oxide.
