IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP To determine the phosphate binder of choice in patients with uremia and peptic ulcerations, aluminum hydroxide (Alu-cap; I) was compared with sucralfate (Antepsin; II) in 12 dialysis patients for 3 wk. Three study periods were adopted: in the first study, patients took their regular dose of I; in the second study, I was stopped; and in the third study, II was substituted for I on the basis of one g of II for 475 mg of I. Sucralfate caused a decrease in serum phosphate concentration comparable with that obtained with I, but similar absorption of aluminum resulted. It was concluded that II is a phosphate binding agent comparable in potency with I and that it may have a useful place in the management of hyperphosphatemia in uremia.
