IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The performance of Riopan (magaldrate; I), Riopan Plus (magaldrate, combination, simethicone; II), Maalox (aluminum hydroxide, combination, magnesium hydroxide; III), Maalox Plus (aluminum hydroxide, combination, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone; IV), and Mylanta (aluminum hydroxide, combination, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone; V), evaluated by a static acid neutralizing capacity test, pH-stat titration test, and dynamic acid neutralizing capacity test, is reported. The static acid neutralization test showed I and II to have more acid neutralizing capacity, on an equal weight basis, than the other antacids. In the pH-stat test, I and II reacted 10 times faster with acid than the other products. In the dynamic acid neutralization test, the onset of action at pH 3 for I and II was 20 times faster than for IV and 56 times faster than for V. Duration of acid neutralization at pH above 3 for I and II, was 2 times longer than for III and IV and 1.6 times longer than for V.
