IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effects of an aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide combination antacid (Maalox; I) on the pharmacokinetics of a single oral 100 mg dose of flurbiprofen (Ansaid; II) are reported in 12 young male subjects, aged 21 to 31 yr, and 7 male geriatric subjects, aged 58 to 77 yr. In a crossover design study I had no effect on the rate and extent of total II absorption in the young subjects. In the geriatric subjects I had no effect on II absorption. There was a trend for lower plasma levels of total II with I in the geriatric group and hence a reduction in rate of I absorption although differences were not significant. The study also indicated a steady state determination of the influence of I administration on II pharmacokinetics. The young group received, from day 3 to day 8, 100 mg of II every 12 h with and without I. Steady state pharmacokinetics were similar to those after single administration: the antacid had no effect on either the rate or the extent of total II absorption.
