The German Government has decided that 130,000 tons of beverage cartons have to be collected and recirculated within 1995, to be able to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill. The beverage cartons for fresh drinks contain 80% fiber and 20% plastic, while the cartons used for drinks for longer storage life contain 75% fiber, 21% plastic and 4% aluminum. The cartons are recovered by repulping in the paper industry. The fibers are separated from the plastic and aluminum by the repulping. The fiber material is a first class raw material for producing new paper products such as hygiene paper and egg cartons. The plastic and aluminum residue from the repulping process represents a problem to the paper industry, and needs to be solved. ELOPAK and TETRAPAC has together with the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) been seeking solutions that will secure a better handling of the reject. One solution to the reject problem is that of taking out the aluminum fraction for remelting, and to utilize the plastic directly for energy purposes in the papermill.
