Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effect of concurrent antacid administration on the availability of contraceptive steroids was studied in 12 female volunteers given a single contraceptive tablet containing 30 mcg of ethinyl estradiol and one mg of norethindrone acetate (norethisterone acetate) or 30 mcg ethinyl estradiol, combination, 150 mcg levonorgestrel (Nordette) and an antacid tablet containing 0.25 g of aluminum hydroxide, combination, 0.5 g magnesium trisilicate (Gelusil). Results showed no statistically significant differences in contraceptive steroid concentrations at different time intervals when administered with or without an antacid. There were also no differences in the time to reach peak concentrations between the treatments.
